Bio

Derek Weiler spent most of his life developing his artistic practice in New York City. His work combines elements of conceptual research with experimentation in print making techniques. Some of the themes he explores concern sexual identity, visibility of emotion, authenticity of expression. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart, Germany, and received his MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Derek’s early work was featured in the historic exhibitions Stonewall 25 at White Columns, New York, and Faggots – A Communiqué From North America at Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, Buenos Aires. An artist in residence at Yaddo and the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant, he has shown in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Cologne, Berlin, Brussels, and San Diego. He holds a PhD in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, and is currently lecturing at Palomar College and Southwestern College in San Diego.
